Another golden day for those competing in the May club event, with nice warm weather and above average waves on offer as we head towards the back end of this shortened year.

Their was a number of excellent performances, with Dustin Atkinson (Opens Men) continuing his epic run on contest front , with another win in 2009. He had a slow start to the final but came home strong to pip young Ollie Ingham for the win. Dustin last ride, a 7.0 point score saw him jag a nice clean right peak with the natural-footer flaring his usual range of radical turns. Ollie was unlucky as in the end he only missed out on the win by 0.2 . Heath Irving has had a great year and he was again in the mix placing third with Billy Langley 4th and Shaun Irving 4th.

The 18’s saw Damon Price post a stylish victory with the big Goofy-Footer impressing everyone with his wild attack. It’s great to see him back in the fold and if he could turn out every month Im sure a club title would one day be his. His surfing is based on power and his style is best suited to bigger waves but he can turn in on in smaller conditions and he did just that beating ratings leader Max Brokman , Tyson Brunn , Jess Francis and Jack Entwistle . Good standard set by all the guys and again this division continues to impress as those younger guys are stepping up each time they hit the water.

The opens women’s final saw Louis Smith return with a great win. In doing so Louis beat Lauren Mc Aleer and Jess Horin. It’s important that we keep pushing the girls as I believe our club has some talented female surfers. The more people, who compete, mean the competition will only get stronger, so girls if you have friends who want to join the club for next year, advise them.

Others who, excelled during the day by winning their age groups included Louie Dowling (12’s Boys ), Jack Andrews (14’s Boys) ,Emily (13’s Girls),Lauren Mc Aleer (16’s Girls), Jan Bruun (B Grade).

The last event for the year will be held on SATURDAY 13TH JUNE,,

GET THIER AS IT’S YOUR LAST CHANCE TO PICK UP POINTS FOR 2009

#Important Note After a meeting with the board, we have decided the only far result for members would be to allow all surfers to drop their two lowest results. This was made due to the fact we had to drop an event off due to no surf. So your top 5 results will count.

The 25th Jesus Pro Am at Manly had great waves , good weather and even better it came down to two locals who would fight it out for victory . Yes the Open Men’s Division was outstanding and it came down to QBC verse NSB Nick Riley Vs Dustin Atkinson.

With the Men’s final replicating a local inter-club heat, Queenscliff Boardriders Club member Riley, faced the in-form Atkinson from the North Steyne Boardriders Club.

In excellent 1m surf at Queenscliff Beach, both Riley and Atkinson displayed great early round form, with each progressing undefeated to the man-on-man 20-minute final.

Dustin was the standout of the field and he showed that he has the skill to match any pro in this country. It would be great to see him test himself more often but like a lot of great surfers with no sponsors its a tough ask. His radical attack took a lot of people by surprise and he did fly under the radar a bit. His boards looked awesome and his ability to sniff out great waves was impressive.

The highlight was his perfect 10 point ride, the only one of the event which came in round 3. He unleashed a series of massive controlled turns in the pockets before throwing buckets on what was a heavy closeout section.

The final wasn’t the greatest with long waited between sets but when they did come both guys really unleashed. Riley got off to a lead but after the form he showed leading into the final you always knew Dustin would challenge and he did mount late charge netting a strong 7.20 scoring ride after holding priority through an extended lull in waves, but in the end time ran out for the natural footer.

Riley was extremely pleased with his win in what was his first contest after sustaining a severed tendon in his foot which forced him out of the water for 3 months.
“I’m absolutely stoked”, exclaimed Riley, “To come back from injury with a win, especially here at home and against my good mate Dustin, is great”“The win is a huge confidence booster for me and will set up the rest of my year competitively”.

For his win, Riley took home $1000 cash and a trip to Samoa courtesy of Line Up Surf Travel.
It sucked big time that Dustin got a, shitty little prize pack for 2nd. How they worked that one out in beyond me. It really was very poor that a surfer can get through 6 heats and come away with a one hundred dollar prize pack, while the winner collected $1000 and trip worth another 4 grand.

In what was a first for NSB, last Saturdays add on club round saw members compete in the tough ‘’Surf Tag’’ format and the overall feedback was positive with everyone having a great day out.
Yes there was teething problems and some teams where more stacked than others but the whole idea was for one to bring everyone together in a fun environment and build club spirit Also we wanted to give everyone the opportunity to surf what is regarded as the toughest format in surfing.
For the club to move forward it’s always good to keep the grommets and older on track with practice part of what it takes to be successful.
Its sounds easy , three waves in 10 minutes but the reality is , it’s tough trying to pick a wave that won’t shut down as most heats are separated by only a couple of points
Onto to the day , there was plenty of personal in the water as one of the bigger more cleaner swell arrived in time for the contest with waves reaching the 4 feet range on offer.

Teams for the final where

Red Heath Irving , Lucas , Jesse H , Malici , Dave
White Shaun Irving , Nathan , Jack, Lauren ,Shaun
Yellow Tristain Mac, Bodhi , Spohia , Ty , James
Blue Jan Bruun , Ronny , Emily, Seb

The final saw Nathan Munro and the white team on fire, the goofy footer posted a 21.0 total. This kid is a star of the future and one of our strongest juniors. Other to post good scores early included Ronny Wong (18.5) ,and Heath Irving (23.5) . It started to get tight during the middle stages and the white team who lead early came back to the back to the field after some of the boys got caught in the line up and couldn’t get back in the box for the tag. The final was exciting and everyone on the beach was cheering and with 15 minutes remaining an unlucky star emerged James Mitchell a late starter in team yellow produced a performance that our top guys would have loved. He kicked off with 2 solid scores of 5.0 points before unleashing on the set of the day. A series of radical turns in the pocket on the left peak that stood up right down the bank, set the crowd cheering. It was the best wave of the day and in fact the 9.5 score could or should have been a perfect 10, that’s how good it was. That wave was enough to secured there team a much deserved win. Spohia Bernard and Brodhi Atkinson were outstanding and also deserve praise.

As I said, it was our first Tag Team and I’m sure there will be many more in the future.

GREAT WORK CREW

Dimmy

The sun was out, the music was pumping through the PA system and Levett family was doing their thing on the BBQ and what’s more we have one of the best turn outs in years for the March 2009 club contest at Nth Steyne.
For the 1st time in a long time we had quarters in the 18,s boys, Opens and B grade as well as big heat numbers in the grommets which is encouraging for the future of the club.

The waves were 1-2 feet but the left peak offered up enough wave face to rip into and that was the case during the morning session with big scores laid down by a number of surfers who were looking to make their way into their division finals.

Once we hit the final stage , everyone was suffering a bit after having to fight through a series of tough heats and i will start with the 18’s Boys division , with Jesse Francis long drought coming to an end with the natural-footer full deserving his win as he really has improved his contest act of late. Jesse is a surf rat and the long hours he puts in the water is paying off and his polished attack was impressive as he got the better of Max Brokman with Nathan Munro and Tyson Bruun rounding out a quality final.

The girls also deserve praise and it’s great to see the improvement level in the way to attack a heat and it was Tori Levett stylish attack, impressing the judges most. She has really lifted her game and she is enjoying the challenge of taking on the 16’s division. We have a great bunch of girls who all put it on rail and its pretty evident by the fact we have had multiple winners this year .Tori’s two wave combo collected her a total of 11.5 and those two solid waves she found on the right hand peak was enough to get the job done. Also ripping was Sophia Bernard , Lauren Mc Aleer , Rosie Vanderfield and Jodie Randall who finished the final in that order. Well done girls. The 13’s girls were taken out by mini grommet Emily.

The 12’s Boys are blowing minds and they really rip for kids that young. Their is a real pack forming within that age group, you see them in the water every day heckling each other, it’s great to see boys. Powerhouse Louie Dowling is stamping himself as a star of the future and his radical attack saw him charge into another victory. He didn’t have it all his own way with Peter Long claiming 2nd with new grom Jamie Krups 3rd and Billy Randall 4th.

Performance of the day went to Lauren Mc Aleer with the Rip Curl team rider , outstanding in the Open Women’s final where she posted a 8.5 before backing it up with a 8.0 . Great surfing from a star in the making.
Other winners included

Opens men 1st Dustin Atkinson, 2nd Heath Irving , 3rd Max Brokman , 4th Dave Hislop
14’s Boys , 1st Jack Morrison , 2nd Jack Andrews , 3rd Luka Couriel, 4th Ben Penny
B Grade , 1st Victor Levett, 2nd Jan Bruun , 3rd Shaun , 4th Pickles 5th Ty Rophia.

Thanks for a great day crew.

The 2009 Kirra Teams Challenge , is spoken of as the ultimate challenge for clubs but really they should say it an impossible task if your from a Sydney club with a wide arrange of problems facing not only NSB but all clubs from our region.

Before I get into all that our team had a great time away , yer we didn’t come in the top 20 but who cares the boys really supported each other and had a awesome four days away.

The team we took away had class written all over it , lead by Beau Mitchell, Paul Evans, Dustin Atkinson, Heath Irving, David Hislop, Tristian Mc Caffery with Max Brokman and Ollie Ingham the grommets.

Onto the event,

It weird but it seems like if the commentary team doesn’t know who you are they don’t ever read your scores out and even though the judging panel was world class , things just didn’t go our way with a number of doggy decisions stopping our surfers in their tracks.

We started on Friday with Max, who posted a third place in a heat that was won by Jack Freestone, it was a disappointing for him as he had been ripping the week before at boardriders. Being the 1st heat of the day was tough but next time we will need to fire him up more before he hits the water.

Oliver , had a smoker heat , with Owen Wright the premiere Pro junior in this country , his last five events had seem him take victory , the guy is a freak,. Ollie went in with a plan and from the outset it seems like a heavy battle with Wright and Dan Prior exchanging 9 plus scores. It was a barrage but Oliver wasn’t faze , his performance was the best I had ever seen from the kid, is fact his third place wasn’t a good indicator of his work . He grabbed a 6.0 point ride and than waited before unleashing on a bomb set. Driving hard off the bottom into a series of pocket turns Ollie turned it on to the cheers of his club mates. That for me was the highlight of the event. He really had a go and posted a 8.27 , like I said his two wave combo of 14.27 deserved a better result.

When it comes to cracker heats , Heath Irving scored on of the best . Former WCT Surfer Luke Munro , Asher Pacey and coast ripper Adam Bennetts put it to Heath and the goofy-footer gave it everything. They all have massive scores and to put it into context , Munro came in 3rd with a 7.50 and a 7,25. Ummm. Heavy hey. For me Heath back hand attack deserved way more than the two high 5 point rides they threw him. But he did entertain.

Saturday morning began with Pauly Evans , love having Pauly and the family back in the fold,I know he feels weird surfing when he is back living at Scotts but he is still one of the boys and they all love hanging with him , Mel and Baby Conan.
His heat was another solid one and surfing off the wall , Paul unleashed from the outset, Fuck he is that good he could still be surfing the tour. He started with his trademark carve into front side air, It was all-time. Great start but more was to come with a set approaching he got into a great spot , took off and started throwing buckets everywhere. Four massive turns set the crowd off , and into the lead he went with a 8.83. Well we thought we had a our first win but like it wasn’t to be with a Marcus Abooddy grabbing the lead right at the win , for me they got that result totally wrong but it was a 2nd place.

Dustin Atkinson was next up and the kids surfing the middle bank looked good but could find a good one to open up on until mid way through the heat but once he did he smashed some great turns. HI highest score was a 6,50 but with time out the powerful natural-footer just couldn’t find another good one and had to settle for 4th.

Tristan Mac was next in and the goofy-footer fresh from three months overseas looks great , a couple of mid range scores and he was in the game. He was in 2nd place until the last 30 seconds but couldn’t hold off Brendan Leckie who got a small score to push him back into third.

David Hislop was another looking to finish off strong and he didn’t let anyone down with a solid performance. The natural-footer was all over the rights in the middle but a no call on a certain interference lead to him finishing in third place, it was blatant in my books and ill leave it at that

Sunday came and it was left to Beau Mitchell and the goofy-footer didn’t let up down, swooping into some great waves where he pushed his board through a series of solid back hand turns. The life member really looked great and it took a spirited charge from James Wood to stop him from winning.

Anyway , it was a great time away , thanks for those who went up to support, Jan , Mac , Lucas , Jesse and the Shem were at the beach every heat that was surfed.

Well winter came early, last Saturday when NSB held their monthly club contest with high winds, heavy rain and solid waves greeting the crew for what turned out to be a great day of surfing. In what was a first for the club who picked up and moved down to the big shed and it proved to be a winner with the extra protection keeping everyone dry.

The roll up was solid in all divisions, with a massive amount of interest in the 18’s draw, which was great from a club point of view. After an intense battle it was down to the final and it was pocket rocket Nathan Munro who carved his way to his 1st win of 2009. His impressive performance saw him net 12.50 including a 7 point ride and that was enough to secure the win over run away series leader Max Brokman with Jesse Francis a standout in 3rd and Adam Frigo 4th.
The Opens had class written all over it , a lot of the Kirra Teams Boys turned out as a warm up and it took an awesome performance from Max Brokman to claim his 1st ever Open win. The natural-footer was outstanding during the final posting a 8 point ride that included some serous turns and a nice air. With the pack chasing he then grab a nice back up of 5.5 to take the win from Tristan Mc Caffery who was stoked to be back in the fold after a couple of months overseas. Coming in 3rd was Heath Irving , 4th David Hislop, 5th Arnauld and 6th Ollie Ingham.
The action was electric in the girls department with Lauren Mc Aleer in red hot form in the 16’s girls final posting a massive 15 point out of 20 to claim the win from an ever improving Tori Levett with Sophia Bernard and Jodie Randall rounding out the final. It was a Mc Aleer double with Sister Kate taking the 13’d girls win from Emily. The Open women’s saw Sam Walker bounce back winning the final from Jesse Horin and Ashley Maaka .

Congratulations to all in the new mini grommets in the club great to see so many new faces, the 12’s final saw Louis Dowling rain supreme but he wasn’t alone in the ripping department with Zac 2nd , Toby 3rd and Will 4th in what was a great look into the future.
It was a battle of the Jacks in the 14’s final , Morrison outlasted an impressive Andrews with both showing plenty of flare, coming in 3rd , 4th and 5th was Sam, Malachi Scruse and Tom Mc Caffery.

Last but not least was the elder statesman the B Grade, The final saw a late entry from my mate Bullman , and it must be said he was surfing great and it took a mighty effort from Tai Rophia to take the win from him , a disappointed Jan couldn’t buy a wave ended up 3rd with Wazza Randall claiming fourth after forgetting that dropping in was a no no in a final, It was worth it though with the wave running down the line for the ‘MR’ look alike , 5TH went to Shaun , 6th to Ronny Wong and Dazza Speight took 7th .

Again it was a great effort from the whole gang setting up and packing down and remember every member has to judge 3 heats an event.
Next event in 2nd weekend of March

See ya thier.
